Main attractions in Western Sri Lanka

Western Sri Lanka is the starting point of a tour in Sri Lanka. Discover the beaches of the west coast and the economic capital of Colombo.

COLOMBO

The economic capital of the country is fast developing with new hotels, casinos, restaurants and shops opening up regularly. Spend a day in Colombo and enjoy the city life.

For those interested in colonial architecture, the Dutch Fort and Pettah should be explored. Stop for lunch at the restored Dutch Hospital built in the 17th century and visit the Dutch Museum in Pettah.

Head south from Pettah and get a taste of local life where families and lovers gather to walk along the “Galle Face Green.

relax in the Viharamahadevi Park and visit the National Museum, adjacent to the park. The museum contains some exceptional pieces like crowns of the ancient kings of the kingdom of Kandy.

KALPITIYA

Kalpitiya is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for watersports. “Bar Reef” offers good snorkeling and diving possibilities, while kite surfing is now very popular. One of the other main reasons to go to Kalpitiya is for dolphin watching (from November to March) where dozens or even hundreds of dolphins are often sighted.

NEGOMBO

If you want to lie on the beach directly after your arrival, Negombo is the place to go. Right next to the Airport, this seaside resort is a quiet place to relax and enjoy watersports. You can visit old Catholic churches and cycle along the Dutch Canal. South of Negombo, the Muthurajawela Marsh offers a taste of Sri Lankan fauna with its birds, crocodiles and monkeys.

HIKKADUWA

Hikkaduwa is very popular for its beaches and its parties in western Sri Lanka. Don’t visit if you are not searching for a beach party or a surfing spot. If you want to bring some traditional souvenirs home, go to the neighboring town of Ambalangoda which is famous for crafting authentic “devil masks”, used during traditional dances and religious practices to chase away evil spirits.

BENTOTA

Bentota though lacking in a busy beach life can compete with the best beaches that can be found on the southern or eastern coasts. You will find a wide range of high-end accommodation where those interested in relaxing in the sun or taking a leisurely swim can enjoy themselves. You can also enjoy watersports like jet skiing or water skiing.
